Mobile Skills Unit Update

A very busy month for the Mobile Skills Unit! At the start of May the MSU arrived at Mull & Iona Community Hospital on the Isle of Mull.  Nursing, medical, social care and SAS staff benefited from training in clinical scenarios, speech and language training sessions, PICC line training, palliative care and obstetric emergencies.

The Mobile Skills Unit began its annual tour of the Western Isles. First stop was the Isle of Barra. Nurses, GPs, paramedics, fire and rescue and the coastguard came together for EMRS recognition of seriously injured/sick child and paediatric emergencies. The Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors also delivered the two day Mobile Skills Unit faculty development course.  It was the third course of 2024 but the first ever course to be run on the Island!

Next stop on the tour was the Uist & Barra Hospital in Benbecula. Activities included an EMRS liaison visit, Scottish maternity & neonatal course, chest drains and psychiatry simulation course.

The unit then travelled on to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway for more psychiatry sim, core suturing skills and lots more!

Edinburgh Napier University Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre

The CSMEN team held our quarterly review meeting at Edinburgh Napier University Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre.  Professor Cathel Breen kindly gave us a tour of the excellent facilities and we met with some of the centre staff. We were impressed with the simulated home environment where we had the opportunity to observe teaching in progress. We were also delighted to see the extensive range of equipment and learn how the centre benefits students from a range of disciplines.

CSMEN are very interested in visiting other simulation centres in Scotland.  If you would like to host a us, please contact csmen@nes.scot.nhs.uk

Funding applications for the Multidisciplinary Rural Advanced Practice (RAP) MSc Programme 2024

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) are providing funding for 10 Scottish Rural Nurses and AHP Practitioners currently working within Remote, Rural & Island Primary and NHS Community Care (this may include those who work in community hospitals and cover primary care services) to undertake the RAP MSc programme being delivered by the University of the Highland & Islands (UHI).

Please note, only if places and funding allow, we may support some learners with NMP and Clinical Assessment Modules, on the understanding that they will complete to a minimum of year 2, P.G.
