Global Consensus Statement on Simulation-Based Practice in Healthcare

The Clinical Skills Managed Educational Network as the Lead in Simulation within NES endorses the Global Consensus Statement on Simulation based practice in healthcare published and presented to policy makers and leaders in May 2024. This endorsement formally acknowledges and embraces the benefits of simulation in healthcare practice and education.

This includes a commitment to sustained support and a mandate for the application of simulation within education, training, and clinical environments.

We advocate for healthcare systems and education institutions to commit themselves to the goal of high-quality healthcare and improved patient outcomes. This commitment should encompass the promotion and resource support of simulation-based learning opportunities for individuals and inter-professional teams throughout all stages and levels of a caregiver’s career, in alignment with best practice standards.

We call upon simulation practitioners to champion healthcare simulation as an indispensable learning tool, adhere to best practice standards, maintain a commitment to lifelong learning, and persist in their fervent advocacy for patient safety.

This statement, the result of an international collaborative effort, aims to establish a consensus on the key priorities for the broad adoption of exemplary simulation practice that benefits patients and healthcare workforces globally. Simulation Resources in Scotland – Update for 2024!

CSMEN is delighted to announce that the updated Simulation Resources in Scotland project is now available on our website.  We have created an easy-to-use database of simulation equipment and expertise across Scotland.

It is new and improved since the last version

  • Course and equipment information are presented by simulation centre
  • Centre contact information is shown on an interactive map
  • Easy to use tables with search function by equipment type or centre

It is also possible to download Excel files with equipment and course information as you could before.

It is a fantastic resource which we hope will turn collaborative talk into collaborative action.  It is a live document and the tables will be updated as we receive information.  We know we do not have all the data but hope that it is a useful start.  If you have any information or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us via the CSMEN email address (CSMEN@nes.scot.nhs.uk).  Thank you.

Please do have a look at the report, map, table and files on our website.

Mobile Skills Unit Update

October began with the second week of the Mobile Skills Unit’s visit to Montfield Hospital, Lerwick in Shetland. Ending 2 weeks of multi-professional and multi-agency training, over 140 participants attended sessions which included:

  • ScotSTAR Paediatric Retrieval Outreach sessions for medics and medical students
  • Suture Skills for Midwives
  • SAS First Responder training
  • Paediatric BLS for Fire Crews
  • Dental Medical Emergency Training for dentists and nurses
  • Neonatal life support for medics, midwives and nurses

From Shetland to the Western Isles the MSU travelled to Outer Uist & Barra Hospital in Benbecula to support BASICS Scotland. Three intensive days of training were delivered to a total of 33 local doctors, nurses and paramedics:

  • Day 1 Cardiac – the management of cardiac emergencies including out of hospital cardiac arrest
  • Day 2 Trauma – chest assessment and the management of chest injuries
  • Day 3 Paediatrics – pre-hospital paediatric trauma scenarios, assessment of deteriorating child

After a brief stop at its base at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Depot in Glasgow for vehicle inspections the MSU travelled to Greenock Health & Care Centre. This is the first visit with the GP CPD Connect Team and we are delighted to be supporting this vital training:

  • Domestic violence (GPNs & GPs)
  • Child Protection and Paediatrics (GPs)
  • Emergencies in Primary Care (GPs & GPNs)

We will be preparing the Mobile Skills Unit for the 3-5 November ASPiH Conference at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. We are excited to be bringing the MSU to the Conference again and look forward to welcoming delegates onto the MSU to learn about the work of CSMEN and Mobile Skills Unit.

The Mobile Skills Unit truly is a multi-professional and multi-agency resource, if you are thinking of booking the Mobile Skills Unit for your region? Check out the MSU availability on this calendar.

Congratulations to Rubislaw Care Home who are finalists in the 20th National Care Home Awards on the 15th of November! This is regarding training delivered on the Mobile Skills Unit to the care home (first in Scotland) and the partnership they have had with NES colleagues, including our North Regional Lead, Ashley Meldrum! Good luck!

IMT Simulation - Five Years of Learning

As the Internal Medicine Training (IMT) simulation strategy launched into its sixth year, and Joanne finished her PhD by publication based on work relating to the impact of the programme, it seemed the perfect time to write a reflective piece summarising our five years of learning.  The Future Healthcare Journal, a peer-reviewed academic journal with an emphasis on providing practical solutions to current and future healthcare challenges, seemed the ideal destination.

Between 2021 and 2024, ten peer-reviewed articles have been published which detail, using a variety of conceptual lenses and a range of different methodologies, the impact of the IMT simulation strategy.  The work is as compelling as it is extensive; six of the other nine articles are referenced within this feature article, so can be accessed easily via this link.  The current financial climate means that it has never been more important to examine the impact of our educational endeavours, and I hope that many of you reading this will take the time to explore our work and hopefully feel inspired to undertake some evaluative research in your own setting.  Please do get in touch if any of our team can assist in this regard.

ASPiH National Simulation Survey

As part of its 15th anniversary celebrations, ASPiH is delighted to launch the ASPiH national simulation survey.

The intention of the ASPiH national simulation survey is to take a snapshot of how, where and when simulation activities are being used in the United Kingdom and Ireland (and more widely).

Data from the ASPiH national simulation survey will be contrasted with the results from the 2014 National Simulation Development Project which was conducted 10 years ago (link below in comments). The outputs from the ASPiH national simulation survey will be used to make recommendations for educators, clinical teams, regulators, commissioners and other national bodies to support the wider adoption and utilisation of simulation within healthcare education and clinical practice within health and social care settings.

An Introduction to Qualitative Research in Simulation: Laying Down Solid Foundations

Please note that you do NOT need to be attending the whole ASPiH conference to attend the workshop (see below). Professor Sharon Weldon, Professor Gerry Gormley, Dr Sam Smith, Dr Vicky Tallentire, Dr Carla Sá Couto, Professor Guillaume Alinier

Sunday 3rd November 2024, 1330-1730 - Edinburgh International Conference Centre

This workshop is aimed at those completing or hoping to undertake qualitative research projects in the field of simulation, at novice to intermediate level.  It will support participants through the process of identifying a research area, formulating a research question, and designing a study. Different approaches to data collection and analysis will be presented, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own project or idea with peers and experts in the field, in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Pre-conference workshops take place the day prior to the main conference and can be booked at the same time as your conference registration.  If you would like to attend the Pre-conference workshops ONLY please contact events@aspih.org.uk
