Simulation Toolbox

CSMEN recently launched a Simulation Toolbox. You can access the toolbox here. This resource includes a collection of tools to help educators design and deliver quality-assured simulation training such as the Guidelines for Simulation Based Education.

Guidelines for Simulation Based Education

Simulation Based Education Guidelines

Environment

The space and equipment must be safe and appropriate for the training being undertaken.

People

The facilitators must have attended faculty development in respect of simulation and be comfortable and competent discussing the specialist subject being delivered.

The administrative and technological teams must have adequate information and be trained to support the learning experience.

Content

The objectives of the simulation session must be planned and aligned with current curricula and national planning needs.

The pre brief and debrief must use validated models to ensure structure to support the smooth delivery of the session.  Evaluation of the course and trainees is essential to assure course delivery and development.

Principles

All training must be equitable, sustainable, evidence based and quality assured.

Mobile Skills Unit Update

Photos of Mobile Skills Unit

September was another busy month for the Mobile Skills Unit. It travelled to Aberdeen for the NP/APN Network conference at P and J Live. The conference is the largest global forum for advanced practice nurses to network and collaborate on contemporary topics and future trends relevant to their practice.

The unit welcomed international visitors from forty-five countries. CSMEN shared how the Mobile Skills Unit supports Health and Care staff across Scotland.

The unit then travelled to the Suttie Centre at the University of Aberdeen and Ashley Meldrum Senior Clinical Educator (North), facilitated learning sessions for school pupils.

Later in the month the unit returned to Balfour Hospital in Orkney delivering training for NHS staff, and local students. Training included:

  • Application of Pelvic Binder/ Kendrick Traction Splint & Initial Assessment of the Trauma Patient
  • Recording an ECG & ECG Interpretation
  • Case based Cardiology
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and Delirium
  • Recognition and Initial Management of Obstetric Emergencies

The unit is finishing the month at Montfield hospital in Shetland. Planned sessions include:

  • Neonatal Assessment Skills
  • BLS
  • Sutures and Skills for Midwives
  • Dental Training

In October the unit will travel onto Uist and Barra Hospital in Benbecula.

The Mobile Skills Unit truly is a multi-professional and multi-agency resource. If you are thinking of booking the Mobile Skills Unit for your region you can check out the availability on this calendar.

Intravenous Medicines Administration Learning Programme

V Meds

This learning programme has been updated and reviewed by the CSMEN E-skills group. This multi-professional learning programme aims to establish a standardised training in intravenous medicines administration for nursing, medical and relevant allied health care professions.

The programme will support practitioners in their studying, enabling them to work at their own pace, linking their own prior experience to new learning in preparation for transferring this to the workplace. The programme has been structured into four learning units:

  • Professional Issues and Accountability
  • Adverse Incidents and Complications
  • Procedural Guidelines
  • Numeracy Skills for Drug Administration

Simulation-Based Education: A Practical Approach for Health and Care Educators

Simulation Based Education Book

CSMEN Clinical Lead Catie Paton is co- editor of Simulation-Based Education: A Practical Approach for Health and Care Educators. With an increasing focus on Simulation-Based Education (SBE) in health care, this new book is a step-by-step guide to becoming an effective SBE educator.

Simulation-Based Education provides practical advice for undergraduate and postgraduate educators on how to plan and deliver SBE across a range of health and social care disciplines. It covers the planning, delivery and evaluation of SBE, hints and tips for success, and interactive immersive simulation in a variety of education settings.

Written by SBE specialists from across the healthcare disciplines, the book uses a 'workshop' approach that encourages readers to evaluate their current practice and apply new knowledge to develop their strengths, making it invaluable for the entire SBE team.

Getting Started in Simulation-Based Research

A one-day online course (approx. 9.15am to 4.30pm)

Friday 22nd November 2024

A one-day online course aimed at those new to simulation-based research, designed to build the essential foundations to allow participants to design, complete and disseminate their own simulation-based research projects.  It is open to all interested individuals, regardless of professional background or simulation experience, although some working knowledge of how immersive simulation is delivered is desirable.  It is likely to be particularly useful for teaching and development fellows, and those undertaking simulation and education fellowships. The course will include an introduction to the various types of simulation-based research, how to formulate a research question, different approaches to data collection and how to disseminate research findings (including journal selection).  There will also be the opportunity for participants to seek individualised feedback on their research proposals.

Cost: £100 for the day.
